Property Description

Park Crescent Mews East, off Great Portland Street is a cobbled cul-de-sac in Westminster, behind Devonshire Row Mews, another original/ surviving Mews. There are 8 properties in the Mews, used for residential purposes.

A high explosive bomb was dropped onto Portland Place nearby in World War II and in earlier times, the Mews was identified and recorded on the poverty maps for the period as an area of mixed poor to fairly comfortable living conditions and ordinary earnings.

Park Crescent Mews East is situated in Westminster City Council’s Harley Street Conservation Area. First designated in 1968, the area is now dominated by terraced houses of different periods and different levels of social status. It retains a substantial medical presence, whilst offices predominate to the eastern edges.

The Mews properties consist of two and three storeys with plain or painted brickwork facades and mansard roofs. Some of the garages present are intact and the road surface is cobbled.

Everchanging Nature

The original purpose of the Mews was to provide stable/ coach house accommodation to the main houses in Park Crescent. Now, it is used primarily for residential purposes.

A few planning applications have been made before and since 2003, mainly changes to the fenestration. Conservation Area controls now apply to new development in the Mews.
