Property Description

Harley Place is a cobbled, T-shaped cul-de-sac off Harley Street in Westminster, opposite Mansfield Mews, another original/ surviving Mews. There are 23 properties in the Mews used for residential purposes.

Harley-Place

A high explosive bomb fell onto Queen Anne Street, just south of the Mews in World War II. When the London Poverty Maps were published, the area was determined as being fairly comfortable in comparison to the standard household salaries at the time.

Harley Place is situated in the very centre of the Harley Street Conservation Area in Westminster. First designated in 1968, the area is now dominated by terraced houses of different periods and different levels of social status. It retains a substantial medical presence, whilst offices predominate to the eastern edges.

The Mews has two storey, plain brickwork buildings with mansard roof styles and raised party walls. The garages remain intact and are surrounded by a cobbled road surface.

Everchanging Nature

The original purpose of the Mews was to provide stable/ coach house accommodation to the main houses on Wimpole Street and Harley Street. Now, it is predominantly used for residential purposes. It has previously been known as Harley Mews North and North Harley Mews.

A few planning applications have been made before and since 2003 mainly regarding changes to the fenestration, internal and external alterations, roof extensions and the complete demolition of certain properties. Conservation Area controls now apply to new development in the Mews.
