Property Description

Duchess Mews is a cobbled through road between Duchess Street and New Cavendish Street in Westminster. The Mews contains 6 properties used for residential purposes.

In 1940, a high explosive bomb is recorded falling onto Portland Place, north-west of the Mews. When the London Poverty Maps were published, the area was noted as having comfortable living conditions with average household salaries.

Duchess Mews is situated to the east of the Harley Street Conservation Area in Westminster. First designated in 1968, the area is now dominated by terraced houses of different periods and different levels of social status. It retains a substantial medical presence, whilst offices predominate to the eastern edges.

The scale and size of the buildings within the Mews are larger than typical examples and the lack of enclosure and short length make it appear more of a side street than a Mews. The two and three storey buildings are made from plain brickwork and have a mixture of mansard and parapet roof styles.

Numbers 17, 19 and 21 Duchess Mews are registered listed buildings. A compilation show, ‘The Avengers: Wish You Were Here?’ (2011) featured Duchess Mews as a location.

Everchanging Nature

Before and since 2003 there have been a few planning applications made for alterations to the properties, mainly internal alterations. Conservation Area controls apply to any new development in the Mews.
