Situated to the north-east of London in Hackney, is Clarence Mews; a through road off Clarence Place. The Mews contains 28 properties used for commercial purposes. It is located on the site of an original Mews but has been re-developed to a degree that it no longer contains any surviving Mews properties.

The Mews is not part of a Conservation Area. A high explosive bomb fell directly onto the Mews in World War II and when the London Poverty Maps were first published, the area was deemed to have comfortable living conditions with ordinary household earnings.

Clarence Mews is made up of two storey, painted brickwork buildings with roofs hidden behind parapet walls, surrounded by a tarmacadam road surface. Parking is restricted and there are intact garages present.

Everchanging Nature

The original purpose of the Mews was to provide stable/ coach house accommodation for the main houses on the surrounding streets and nowadays the properties are predominantly still used for commercial purposes.

There have been a number of planning applications made for alterations to the properties within the Mews both before and since 2003, the most notable being first-floor extensions and changes to the existing fenestration.
